There are many challenges facing Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and ‘Queer’ (LGBTQ) New Mexicans.
Legal recognition of same-sex marriage or at least recognition of civil unions, and combating discrimination are among the top priorities when it comes to LGBTQ issues. New Mexico has neither relationship recognition nor a constitutional amendment to support same-sex marriage or civil unions.[1]
Despite new legislation legalizing same-sex marriage in states like Delaware, Iowa and New York, most voters in New Mexico still oppose it. A poll from Public Policy Polling shows that 48% of New Mexicans oppose legalizing same-sex marriage, while 42% are in favor of it. About 10% still aren’t sure where they stand on the issue.[2]
