New Mexico Issues

We live in one of the most culturally rich and diverse states in the country, surrounded by beautiful landscapes – and we are all proud to call New Mexico “home”.

At the same time, we recognize that­ New Mexico is faced with a host of challenges, ranging from poor health indicators to low graduation rates, heavy contamination of some of the state’s precious natural resources, and endemic corruption in the public sector. 

Often we rank among the last in the nation when it comes to educational attainment or health.

Underlying all of these challenges is one critical problem – poverty.

New Mexico ranks 49th in the nation when it comes to per capita personal income – average per capita income here is only $20,008 (2008 figures), in contrast to $26,482 nationally[1].
